Miadhu Online reports that the Controller of Immigration and Emigration Hon. Shafiu is ashamed. This is apparently due to the role of Warahmath (the officer who helped in the illegal emigration of two Sultan Park Explosion architects) and his insincerity to the government and his job.
This brings to the question how the sincerity and loyalty of immigration officers to the nation and their job can be ensured. It is very criticial that there will have to be mechanisms in place that would screen officers in the uniformed services including Customs and Immigration. We cannot take risks due to inefficiency and the lethargy of those executives and officers in charge who are trusted with the foresight and the concern of protecting this country.
Imagine an armed officer of the MNDF who wants to pull a stunt to wage jihad by taking the life of a tourist. What if one of those patrolling the streets of Boduthakurufaanu happens to be one of them, ! I don’t think that the Chief of Staff of the MNDF should just say that he is ashamed of it. That is not how one takes responsibility. But one can always get away with saying, who takes responsibility anyway, why me?
With regards to the “Case of Shame” in the Immigration Dept.,
I believe that there should instruments and mechanisms put in place, in the least, to ensure that such a breach will not occur. Supervisors responsible for overseeing the officer responsible can be moved to less important portfolios outside the uniformed services. The People need to have the assurance that another freak will not be allowed through customs and immigration carrying a machine gun.
