Strong emotions often take us off course. Sometimes they erupt outward as anger or impatience. At other times, they sink inward, becoming worry or despair. Either way, the weight can feel overwhelming.

But emotions are not our enemies. They are signs: like waves rising and falling on the ocean. What matters is whether we get carried away by the wave, or learn to ride it with wisdom.

Allah has gifted us with intellect, a light to guide us. If we pause, reflect, and name what we feel, we create space between the spark of emotion and our response. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us that true strength is not in overpowering others, but in controlling oneself at the moment of anger.

Try This

Next time emotions rise:

  • Notice: What am I feeling?
  • Name: What situation gave birth to this feeling?
  • Navigate: What is the best way to respond, with dignity and kindness?

The one who reflects in this way rises above emotions, instead of being swept away by them.

When the Mind Falls Silent

In An auditory mental block (2006), I shared how disturbed emotions once locked me in silence. Words would not come, though my heart was full. That moment taught me: when we get absorbed by emotions, we risk losing our voice. The path back is gentle reflection, giving ourselves permission to breathe and speak again.

The Void Within

In What I don’t Have (2006), I reflected on emptiness and longing. Absorbed in that sense of lack, it felt as if nothing could fill the void. Yet gratitude shifts the story: by noticing blessings instead of dwelling on gaps, emotions stop consuming us and begin guiding us toward meaning.

When Work Hurts the Heart

In Toxic work environments (2019), I wrote about the heavy toll of disrespect and harshness at work. If we get caught up in that negativity, we lose energy and dignity. But if we notice and name the emotions, we can choose a wiser response: and even plant seeds of change in the culture around us.

Each of these reflections, old and new, points to the same truth: do not be absorbed by emotions. They rise, they fall: but with awareness, we can stay steady, carry dignity, and keep moving forward.
