Yesterday I was sitting in ALFresco for a coffee with some of my coffee-cafe-colleagues when the subject of the protest against Naseem So for giving tuition to children at his house came up. These were men who had fought bitterly for reform and rights and for decocracy and human rights in this country.
The men felt that what NOOR was doing now amounted to undue harassment of a law abiding citizen who had served time for his wrongdoing. After all, he has been convicted and punished. They believed that he had the right to lead a normal life. That it was the parents who sent their children to him for tuition; and the parents new that he was convicted of systemically sexually abusing his students when he was a teacher in Iskandhar School. So, when the parents decide to send their children to Naseem So for tuition it was ok.
The same sentiments were what I got from people on two separate occassions yesterday. And last night, according to Miadhu Daily Online, a group of people from the neighbourhood protested against the protestors. Maidhu reported that those who confronted the protestors asked why there should be a protest against a person who had served his punishment for something wrong such a long time ago, when there were paedophiles who were under investigation and not brought to justice.
This sympathy to Naseem so is very interesting. It shows our attitude to sexual child abuse as a people and a nation. The Ministry of Home Affairs also reacted against the petition being circulated by NOOR.
Maldives is really a haven for paedophiles!

Sadly, this year their budhget is so reduced they may not be able to travel to all the islands in the atoll. This govt need sto prioritise the issue in the same status or higher than the drug issue and show its commitment through its allocated funds.

The movement organized by NOOR was one intended for a great purpose. Unfortunately, their approach to spread their message may not have been the most best, or the most appropriate..Ironically, during this protest that was targeted at all the “naseem so’s” children were traumatized. There have been reports of the protestors of NOOR grabbing one of naseem so’s children by the arm on his way home from school, yelling profanities at him about his father. The poor child, who incidentally had an exam the next day, was so shocked and traumatized, fell very ill. How do they justify this? What sin did this young child commit? should he suffer the consequences of something that his father did before he was even born? Should his education and the right for a ‘normal’ life be jeopardized because of this?? What about naseem sir’s parents? Did they too, deserve to be harassed and traumatized at their old age for something that their son did? I am not a pedophile sympathizer by any means. However, subjecting those innocent kids to abuse whilst trying to raise awareness on just this subject is just plain wrong!

There have been cases where women have turned a blind eye, allowed, and even encouraged their husbands and boyfriends to have sex with their own children.The fact that some parents have chosen to send their children to Naseem Sore does not convince me that they believe what they believe about Naseem Sore. It is universally accepted norm that convicted paedophiles should not be allowed to work with underage children. That is the issue NOOR has with Naseem So. He is still giving tuition. If he was working doing something else NOOR will have no reason to pick on him for the awareness drive. Naseem doesnt have right to give tuition, not anymore. You will only understand that when your daughter is abused by his teacher sexually.
