Maldivians are “the monkeys evolution forgot to evolve” and the Makunudhoo island folk “may have a dozen nuts for brains”. This, Simon says, speaking about “the stupidity of the Maldivian mentality, even in this day and age.”
Simon expressed these opinions while addressing the issue of Mass Hysteria on Makunudhoo Island. I could not help noting the tone of Simon’s argument; yet I agree I maybe biased toward those statements because I am a Maldivian, however “unproud” I maybe of that. Some of us have birthright wealth and the most expensive plots of land, just by virtue of their fathers and grandfathers. And this also happens to be the only colateral that any financial institution in the country would accept even for short term funding of SMEs.
It is very easy to think ill of others, yet very difficult to look inwards at oneself. Because science is without emotion and feelings, which are the qualities that make the creatures which poplute Planet Earth human!

I see you don’t get it from your comments about Simon’s post. Please blog and let us know about this stuff you are moaning about – “rayyithunge sarukaaru” and not “rayyithunge veriyeh” What has that got to do with Simon’s Posting. What has made you such a bitter and unhappy person? Are you some kind of a communist nut? Are you and Mugabe in league with this land re-distribution thing? After reading your blog, I am willing to bet that this “landownership in Male’, by virtue of who I am.” you write about is about the land your wife owns! You ought to learn what is satire, humor, ridicule and such!”When we begin to take our failures non-seriously, it means we are ceasing to be afraid of them. It is of immense importance to learn to laugh at ourselves.” – Katherine Mansfield

And anon3: BTW I have no reason to be jealous with anyone cos I am from Addu and not from Male’. I am fortunate to have everything and more: and landownership in Male’, by virtue of who I am. I hope this would suffice to let you know I was not personally attacking anyone or do not have a need to be racist; I have a desire to challenge an intellect I think is worth challenging. But not as this conversation between the both of us.

And anon3: I don’t know what you mean by “the kind of mentality you people possess” … the mentality I possess is know as “servant mentality” which is about serving others. That is my passion. I have no experience of “the collective mentality of the people of Addu”… My experience is that they are like any other Maldivians or humans.

@anon3: I am not a personal friend of Simon and I know him from reading his blog and comments he has made to blogposts. I dont know his father and grandfather and my comments are not at them. I respect his intellect as I have experienced it, which you can see in my comments on his blog. My statement on land ownership is my primary reason being “unproud” as a Maldivian. And land ownership is the same whether its in Male’ or in Addu or anywhere else in this country. I believe you must have your reasons for hating people from Addu. I don’t hate anyone, but the system that creates such disparity among ordinary people. And kindly be informed that there is nothing supreme about me atleast, though I am from Addu. I have never claimed that. But I take pleasure in expressing my opinion and most people have encouraged me to do that. I am sincerely sorry I hurt your feelings in the way I did, which have surfaced the prejudice and hatred you have for a people. I don’t have any hatred for anyone, just the system that have ruled the Maldivians not only for thirty years; but for our known existence. If the people of this country will for the first time elect a “rayyithunge sarukaaru” and not “rayyithunge veriyeh” we would have democracy and freedom. That is what I pray for. Then, all unfair practices including landownership will cease. The same situation as in Male’, with regards to landownership will be seen in Addu, Thinadhoo, Hanimaadhoo, Kadhdhoo and others in the near future. That is why we need reform of landownership in this country sooner than later.

ok. what has it get to do with his fathers and grand fathers. ? Are u jealous? Jealous because u are from Addu and not from Male’. I have seen the mentality of yours from many Adduans and i feel that it it not right. I do not blame u. but i blame the kuda sitee. The hatred has been slowly cultivated and it is showing now. Sorry not now but it has been ongoing since the last 30 or so years. U adduans think u people are supreme and some god has given u supreme powers. U believe that u are the only people who work hard. From what i know, Simon is a hard worker and he is bloody good at what he does as well. I am sure he eats and feeds his kids from “HALAAL ” money he he earns.

@anon1 & 2: No, I dont think this is getting personal. When a person expresses a thought that is “disrespectful” of a people, that is his freedom; if he has a basis for what he says. At the same time, any person belonging to the said “people” also has the right to respond to that intellect. I believe that is fair. It is not a personal attack. It is a challenge to an intellectual point of view.

will be interesting to hear what Simon has to say about this. This is clearly a personal attack and i feel if u have any emotion in you you should have not done that.
