A Case of Sexual Abuse in Brisbane

19 Sep

Brisbane Times has repoted that the Education Department has investigated claims that a six-year-old student ran a “sex club” in a suburban primary school involving a dozen grade one students.

The news item has significance to us in how the society reacts to such incidents in a civilized country like Australia. It also brings to our attention how the authorities, the media, parents and other groups take action and make demands in a forceful yet appropriate manner. The incidents that follow do not seem to have negative connotation attached to the lobby. It seems to be digested and taken positively.

The report states: “The case puts the Brumby Government under pressure to address the problem, barely two months after releasing new procedures guiding parents, teachers and schools on how to respond to allegations of student sexual assault.”

We have lessons to learn from the incident.
