Secular versus Religious States

11 Sep

The following is a post by Mhilmy on secular versus religious states which is directly related to my last post and also the current poll on my blog.I think that this sheds additional light on the issues that has been highlighted so far; and in a very appropriate fashion.

maldives – personal musings: Secular versus Religious States

We have never been a tolerant people. We have been tribal and barbaric. It will take a long time to come out of our animal instincts. I feel that we need to start somewhere. Our school system prepares children for their OLevel and ALevel exams.

Our tertiary education is more of a professional / vocational school system rather than contributing to a broader educational purpose of the nation. We have a long way to go before we can forge an entry into the civilized world.

“Our tertiary education is more of a professional / vocational school system rather than contributing to a broader educational purpose of the nation.” good point!value based education is very important for us, instead of teaching islamic fiqh and wars… we should concentrate more one values.India’s ex-president abdul kalam gave a very special importance to value based education.here is a speech by him on a similar topic.
