Haveeru Online reported that a 13 year old boy has drowned to death August 31, 2007. Several children have drowned in the past few months. The boy is from Huvarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll. He did not know how to swim. The government announced a program to teach all children to swim, following the death of a CHSE student by drowning. Haveeru has reported that so far seven Maldivians have died by drowning this year.
In most cases, death of children by drowning can be attributed to neglect of children. Therefore, it can be considered to be a case of child abuse, in such instances.
We do not have an education program for parents which include awareness on the neglect of children.
