20 Oct

Minivan News 13th October 2008

A group of men who confessed to gang-raping a fourteen year old on Noonu atoll Holhudhoo last month have been released and have threatened the girl they will carry out a repeat attack.

Police say the release of the six men was due to a court order and have said the case is still under investigation. They refused to say where the men were being detained previously.

Islanders say five out of six of the perpetrators are back on the island and consistently harass and threaten the girl and her family.

The family, who now stay indoors for safety, have complained to the island office but no action has been taken.

hilath: i agree with you there… when i talked about that with ” some of my very political and change oriented friends and just some people i know ” they said that these social problems would be minimized when the political status is stabilized. i guess people have forgotten about the social problems and are more focused on these political things when one should be concerned also about rapists, psychotic criminals are running around free… i just hope that who ever is our next president he doesnt forget about the social problems and that people will campaign about changing themselves and stand up for the rights of all those rights which ve been violated…its such a sad sight…

I can’t understand why the MDP does not hold a demonstration over this. Surely, this is a worthwhile case to gather in front of Theemuge and demand that these perpetrators are not free to threat that girl and her family. I am disgusted both with the MDP and Maumoon. But will still go ahead and vote for Anni hoping against hope that things will get better.

I am a doctor in medicine, and i was abused during my childhood by men who stayed at my home.I am 30 years old now and still hurts like yesterday and the memory never goes away.We shouldn’t just write a blog post and let it be. We should come out and demand and raise voice and do whatever we can to save that girl.
