
People watch fairness closely, especially when decisions are hard.
Across my leadership journey, one pattern was clear: teams forgive tough decisions faster than unfair ones.
Fairness builds credibility. Inconsistency erodes it. Fair leadership doesn’t mean pleasing everyone. It means explaining decisions with respect and applying standards evenly.
To me fairness means being firm but kind and not being cruel. For instance, if any team member asks for a leave I will grant without a blink. That kind of trust becomes mutual. I saw that pay off consistently over the years.
A member of my team would never be in hospital without a visit, or a call if I am not around. Consistency in that kind of moral support means people don’t question your intentions – even in challenging times when you are compelled to make difficult decisions.
Fairness calms the nervous system of a workplace.
