There was a time I accepted every meeting, every request, every call – thinking that availability was service. I learned, painfully, that an exhausted leader helps no one.

When exhaustion is the energy that I carry, every interaction becomes an irritation.

I remember such a day when the irritation got the better of me and I had snapped. When I realised my mistake I had gone for a short stroll, came back and wrote an email to apologise to my colleague, called him and told him how embarrased I was.

He later came to see me and we had a chat.

On my evening walks now, I often process the day – and I’ve realized how many problems become clearer after I reconnect with myself.

Peace isn’t avoidance. Peace is preparation.

Reflection: What is one boundary you can honour today to protect your peace?
