Speaking at the launch of a new legal reference book by former Justice Husnu Suood, the Chief Guest Uz. Ahmed Muiz underscored the importance of protecting and promoting the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of Maldives.

He noted that safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms remains one of the most significant objectives of the Constitution. He also highlighted that the 2008 Constitution introduced a dedicated chapter on fundamental rights, which cannot be restricted even by law. Citizens also retain the right to appeal to the courts if these rights are infringed.

In his remarks, he emphasized that the interpretation of constitutional rights must take into account international treaties and the principles embraced by open democratic societies. “The State carries an obligation to protect and promote these rights,” he said.

Celebrating the publication, the Uz. Muiz expressed joy that the book compiles judgments from more than one hundred cases decided by the Supreme Court and High Court. He noted that this compilation would serve as a valuable resource for legal professionals and students.

The event marks another step in strengthening access to legal knowledge and promoting awareness of constitutional protections in the Maldives, by the Maldives Law Institute.
