I extend my unwavering support to the youth of the Maldives who are courageously standing for justice and transparency in the wake of the tragic case of Hawwa Yumna (Yumnu). Their actions remind us all of the power of youth dissent and the profound impact it can have in shaping a just and equitable society.
The voices of young Maldivians have long been instrumental in driving change. We saw this power during the protests of September 2003, when the youth took a stand against systemic injustice following the tragic murder of Evan Naseem in Maafushi Prison. That moment was pivotal, catalyzing democratic reforms and demonstrating the strength of youth-led movements.
Today, the bravery of Maldivian youth in demanding accountability for Yumnu’s case is a continuation of that legacy. It is vital to acknowledge their actions as authentic expressions of concern for justice and societal progress. Dismissing these efforts as politically motivated undermines the legitimacy of their voices and fails to appreciate their critical role in advocating for truth and change.
I call on all institutions, leaders, and communities to listen to and support the youth in their pursuit of justice. Their fight is not only for Yumnu but for the principles of transparency, accountability, and human dignity that define the Maldives as a nation. Let us honor their courage and work together to ensure their efforts lead to meaningful progress.
